Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Proudly Serving Port Coquitlam and Greater Vancouver
Specialized physiotherapy care for pelvic concerns and symptoms
Pelvic floor physiotherapy addresses bladder and bowel concerns, sexual function, and pain in the pelvis and surrounding areas. Physiotherapists working in this field have additional post-graduate training to perform internal vaginal and/or rectal assessment and treatment techniques when indicated. Please note that this will only be performed with your ongoing consent and we are able to offer alternative methods of assessment such as Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging and surface EMG biofeedback.

What to expect at your first appointment:
It's normal to feel a bit nervous about your first visit, so feel free to ask lots of questions and let your practitioner know if you have any concerns at any time. Remember that you can always say "no" to any part of the exam and ask to have an exam ended at any point. You are always in charge of your own body!
We will start by discussing your symptoms and medical history to get a good understanding of what the issue is. You may be asked specific questions about bowel, bladder, and sexual function as these are very closely related and can give us clues about your overall pelvic health.
We will often begin the assessment portion with some general movement screening and looking at alignment, posture, and breathing, as we want to get an idea of how you move and how your body functions as a whole.
Specific pelvic floor assessment may include an internal vaginal and/or rectal exam when indicated and only with your ongoing consent. Internal exams are never mandatory! At Haven, we are also happy to be able to offer rehabilitative ultrasound imaging and surface EMG biofeedback as additional methods of assessing the pelvic floor, at no additional charge.
Based on all of the above, we will explain what we think is going on and design an individualized treatment plan that works for you to help you achieve your goals!
Your treatment plan may include:
• Pelvic floor muscle exercises
• Rehabilitative ultrasound or surface EMG biofeedback
• Manual therapy (soft tissue release, scar massage, joint mobilizations)
• Dry needling (IMS)/acupuncture
• TENS/electrical stimulation
• Taping and use of supports/belts when indicated
• Exercise and functional training
• Behavioural strategies and education
• Referral to other healthcare practitioners
